Another road into Ironbridge Gorge is to be closed while work to stabilise the ground is carried out.

Church Hill, in Ironbridge, will be closed to traffic tomorrow from the Madeley Road roundabout down to the junction with New Road and St Luke's Road.

The bottom section of the road will remain open. Telford & Wrekin Council will be carrying out work on the sides of the road to prevent slippage.

This stabilisation work will include putting in pilings and reinstating some of the bank which has already slipped onto the road.

Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "Although the road closure order comes into effect this week, the first three weeks will be short-term closures to allow the electricity company to reroute an overhead electricity cable.

"The three-month closure will start on January 28 for the main work to be carried out."

He said that during the road closure diversions will be signposted and access will be maintained for residents where possible.

The road was closed in September 2011 for emergency repairs after the partial collapse of a boundary wall and a linked electricity cable.

Church Hill is the second road in the gorge to be closed for stabilisation work within the past two months.

Jiggers Bank, in Coalbrookdale, has been closed since the end of November after two landslides which left more than 50 tonnes of rock and mud debris across the road.

Work is currently being done on a major project to secure the rockface with netting, although progress is dependent on weather conditions.

The road was also closed for about two weeks in October while essential maintenance work was carried out, and was shut for several weeks in the summer of 2008 while further stabilisation work was completed.
