Road safety works drive ahead in Walsall
Work has started on the latest phase of improvements on a busy route through Walsall as part of a £120,000 road safety package.
Roadworks are in place on Broadway and are expected to last for six to eight weeks, depending on the weather. It follows work last year which saw road markings and pedestrian crossing points near Lincoln Road improved.
There has been a series of accidents along the main road, particularly at its junction with Sutton Road.
Roads chief Tom Ansell said the second phase of work would benefit drivers and pedestrians and would help allay safety fears raised by residents and businesses along the busy route.
"This second phase of work should be completed by spring and follows our discussions with residents and businesses in the Broadway area that raised concerns about road safety.
"It is a busy route and the improvements have been designed to help pedestrians, residents, shoppers and drivers alike.
"We consulted with local residents and businesses and gained support from the majority to press ahead with this £120,000 scheme."
Dropped kerbs and tactile paving will be introduced at Broadway and The Crescent roundabout to make life easier for pedestrians and to widen the splitter islands to reduce the crossing widths.
Containment kerbs which are higher than normal will be put outside the United Reformed Church on Broadway North and Sutton Road roundabout so any vehicles hitting them will rebound back into the carriageway.
Pedestrian refuges have already been installed along Broadway North close to the junction with Lincoln Road, while road markings including centre hatching and lane guidance markings have been changed at the Broadway-Sutton Road roundabout and along Broadway North.
