Carol Chapman, who was well known in Market Drayton and across north Shropshire, died on Sunday morning from a suspected heart-attack. She was 68.

She was an active member of Drayton Civic Society and ran the town's museum for more than 10 years. She also held director positions with both the Action for Market Towns group and North Shropshire Tourism Limited as well being involved with the Market Drayton Chamber of Trade and Commerce.

Tributes have been paid to her today by her husband Clive and friends.

"For more than 20 years Carol has been a community stalwart particularly in Market Drayton. She did a tremendous amount of work, most of which was done behind the scenes," said Mr Chapman.

"She was a sprightly person, a great woman and a wonderful wife – 68 is no age at all, it is a terrible shock."

He added: "She never did anything by halves, we were together for 46 years but we were always laughing."

Sian Rushton, who worked alongside Mrs Chapman to form the Market Drayton Town Plan, said: "Carol was a lovely person, her passing is a great loss to the town."

Friend Philippa Atkey said: "Carol was always so full of energy and worked so tirelessly for the benefit of others."

Mrs Chapman, a retired teacher, leaves her son Adrian Chapman-Jones as well as two grandchildren.
