Hundreds of villagers have already signed up to the petition for St Martins Road in Gobowen.

The campaign is being led by Dot Basham, whose granddaughter attends Gobowen Primary School.

Many families cross St Martins Road each morning to get to the school and campaigners say there has been at least one near miss, where a youngster almost got knocked over.

Mrs Basham said the introduction of a speed camera van had failed to slow all traffic.

"Crossing the road is dangerous mainly because of the speed of cars coming along the road.

"There is sometimes a speed camera van but there is still a problem.

"The van caught 1,000 drivers speeding in the first month it was there so that shows the size of the problem.

"Some older youngsters actually cross the road unaccompanied and we are just don't want something terrible to happen."

A school crossing patrol there was ended some time ago.

Mrs Basham said: "Everyone knows there is a problem, which is why the lollipop man used to be there.

"I am getting a lot of support – I have about 120 people sign one petition and there are others at West Place Stores, the Post Office and the Co-op."
