Shropshire caught in grip of snow as big freeze to continue

[gallery] Shropshire and Mid Wales were trapped in the grip of snow today as the Met Office forecast that the big freeze is set to last until at least the end of the week.

The county is set to be hit by temperatures as low as -5C (23F) this week – with more snow on the way today and tomorrow.

A yellow alert of snow for the region was lifted by the Met Office, but forecasters said more snow would fall through this morning while temperatures would struggle to rise above freezing.

Sixty-three schools were closed across Shropshire and Telford at 8am, with more expected to fall victim to the cold snap. The Ironbridge Gorge museums were closed throughout the day after fresh snowfall in the Gorge.

Forecasters said the weather was set to turn particularly cold, with temperatures as low as -5C (23F) expected tonight and tomorrow and further snow tomorrow, and further ice warnings have been issued for the region for tomorrow. Up to 2ins (5cm) of snow fell on the region yesterday causing yet more misery for some.

In Telford, a bus crashed into railings outside the Abraham Darby Academy in Madeley at 6pm Arriva stopped all bus services across Telford following the incident due to treacherous conditions.

In Oswestry, a mother and her two children got stuck when their car became trapped in mud after they had been sledging. Firefighters were called to help the family, who became trapped behind the town's cemetery in Victoria Road just before at 3.15pm.

Both Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin Councils sent gritters back onto the roads yesterday afternoon. Shropshire Council was operating a special snowline from 7am today on (01743) 252980 and Telford & Wrekin was operating a similar system on (01952) 380100 from 7.15am.

Elsewhere, the wintry conditions have led to at least five deaths across the UK. One person was killed on the A12 in Essex last night. And four climbers were swept to their deaths in an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands. They were climbing on Bidean Nam Bian near Glencoe when a snow-covered slope is believed to have given way.
