The boy was flown to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital following a collision between a blue Fiat Punto and a Ford Transit van at the junction of Shrewsbury Road and Maes-Y-Clawdd in Oswestry.

The crash happened at about 11.50am yesterday and the road was closed until 1pm.

The eight-year-old, who was travelling as a passenger in the van, was taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital by air ambulance, while a woman in her 30s was treated for neck pain before being taken by land ambulance to the same hospital.

Shrewsbury Road was closed from the Mile End Roundabout and traffic heading into town was diverted.

Steve Parry, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "We sent an air ambulance from Cosford, one ambulance and a community paramedic.

"We treated an eight-year-old male, from the van, for head injuries and he was airlifted to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

"In the car was a female in her 30s who had neck pain so she was taken by ambulance to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital."

A spokeswoman for West Mercia Police said officers diverted traffic to and from the town centre, while also helping with the safety of the scene and the recovery of the vehicles involved.

A spokesman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said one appliance was sent to make the vehicles safe and assist.

He said: "One appliance from Oswestry was sent to the scene of a road traffic collision involving one pick-up truck and a private saloon car.

"Fire service personnel made both vehicles electrically safe and also assisted with first aid treatment of a vehicle occupant. One young female casualty was conveyed to hospital by land ambulance, one young male casualty was conveyed to hospital by Air Ambulance."
