Campaign to raise £10,000 for Wem Carnival
Wem Carnival organisers have launched a campaign to drum up £10,000 to stage this year's extravaganza.
More than 2,000 people are expected to flock to Wem Carnival – but first its organising committee needs to reach its fundraising target. The carnival is always held on the first Saturday in September – September 7 this year – and will feature floats, music, a fair and two processions.
Sue Holliday, secretary of the Wem Carnival committee, said: "Hopefully we will get as many bands and troops as we can – most say see you next year."
She added: "We will be running a competition for the carnival queen, which will probably be in about June before the kids break up for the school holidays.
"We did make a profit last year.
"Gate funds were up by about £400.
"This is a good reflection of how people feel about the day," Mrs Holliday said.
"But collections tins were down by about £60."
She added: "The carnival committee would like to thank the pubs for their fundraising efforts and to all the customers who took part by buying raffle tickets or donating."
Wem Carnival Committee has already received two cheques totalling £340 which was raised from Christmas raffles.
The next fundraising event will be an Elvis tribute night and disco on February 23 at Wem Sports and Social Club.
Tickets for the fundraiser cost £10 and can be purchased from Beth Lear on 07985 180029.
Carnival organisers say other fundraising activities coming up are due to include cake sales at the Lower Lacon Caravan Park and a duck race in June.
Organisers will also apply for a grant from Wem Town Council, which last year gave them £1,800 towards carnival costs.
