Shropshire set for final icy blast of snow before weekend thaw
Shropshire was today braced for a final icy blast before temperatures start to rise.
Forecasters say about 4in (10cm) of snow is set to fall on high ground in the county late this afternoon, as the Met Office issued a yellow snow alert.
Temperatures dropped to around -6C (21F) last night but experts say they should rise to around 7C (44F) by Saturday.
The snow will finally turn to heavy rain showers on Saturday night and this could lead to floods around the county.
The Environment Agency has warned of the risk of minor localised flooding in some areas due to the rapid thaw.
Flood risk manager Phil Rothwell said: "A combination of rain and snow melt over the weekend will increase the risk of flooding, especially in south west England, Wales, the West Midlands and northern England."
The Met Office has also issued a yellow flood warning for parts of the country on Sunday.
