Milestone birthday for Alice, 104

She has lived through the trauma of two world wars and has seen five monarchs take their place on the throne and now at 104, Alice Prime is one of Shropshire's oldest citizens.

The football-loving mother from Shrewsbury celebrated her 104th birthday yesterday.

She was born in Iscoyd, near Whitchurch, in 1909 when Edward VII was on the throne.

It was not until she was 12 that she saw her first car.

Her son Edwin Prime, 74, said: "She was living on an estate in Iscoyd and one of the local dignitaries came along his car, she had never seen one before. "

Mrs Prime travelled around the country before moving back to Shropshire with her husband and son Edwin in 1960.

Mr Prime, said: "Dad and mum both worked at Wenlock Edge school as caretaker and cook."

Now a widow, Mrs Prime still lives at home with Edwin who cares for her. He said: "She likes watching football on the television, especially Manchester United, and she also enjoys Western novels and reads one before she goes to bed."

He added: "She says the secret of a long life is looking on the bright side of life and not to fall out with anybody."
