Road safety campaigners seek speed camera at Telford crash site
Campaigners this afternoon called for speed cameras and safety improvements on the road where a nine-year-old boy from Telford was killed.
Jayden McIvor, of Hurleybrook Way, Leegomery, died after being hit by a car opposite the Jules Convenience Store in Haybridge Avenue, Hadley on Saturday.
He had been using a pedestrian crossing which was installed after the death of another child on the road about 20 years ago.
But residents say the road is a well-known accident spot and have called for new measures to improve safety.
They say that vehicles frequently break the 30mph limit, though it is not known if speed was a factor in Jayden's death.
Bernard Simpson, 74, from Tibberton, was involved in a car crash at the same spot two years ago.
He said: "I'd been to the shops and I was pulling out of the little layby when a car came around the bend at a very fast speed. If there had been anyone on that crossing the car couldn't have stopped at all, and the car just went straight into the side of my car. My car was a write-off. It was a very scary experience.
"There really needs to be some sort of traffic calming on that stretch of road."
Councillor John Smart, chairman of Hadley & Leegomery Parish Council, said the parish council would be pushing for a speed camera.
He said: "I would like to see a speed camera there but I don't think the accident rate meets the criteria to get one."
