It has agreed to buy the site from Telford and Wrekin Council.

The chain, which already has stores in Wellington, Donnington and Oakengates, will buy part of the old Madeley Court School site.

A planning application has now been submitted, with work likely to start in the early summer if permission is granted.

An Aldi spokesman said: "We are excited to have submitted plans for a new 990sqm store in Madeley, and hope to create approximately 30 jobs.

"It is expected to open for Christmas 2013 and we are looking forward to bringing local shoppers brand-like quality products at everyday low prices."

Independent Councillor Gill Green, who represents Madeley on the borough council, welcomed the plans, but asked for some of the money from the land sale to be reinvested in the area.

She said: "I welcome the job opportunities this will provide and the choice people will have about where they do their shopping, as Aldi offers a different purchasing opportunity to the Big Four supermarkets.

"But I would like to see clarity about what's happening to the rest of the site and the access arrangements."
