Store and flats plan unveiled for Telford pub site
A former pub could be demolished to make room for a new shop and flats in Telford, creating two new jobs.
Developers have applied for planning permission to knock down The Queen's Arms in Southall Road, Dawley, which has been closed for at least five years. They would then put up a two-storey building with a shop on the ground floor and seven one-bedroom flats above.
The site is currently vacant, but has planning permission for homes.
Tristan Wilkinson, from Wilkinson CP Ltd, agent for the developer, said the shop would be used as a convenience store and employ two full-time members of staff.
It would be open 7am to 10pm, Monday to Sunday, and would offer cash point facilities as well as food and drink shopping.
A car park at the back of the store would provide 18 spaces for customers and for the residents in the flats, which will be provided as social housing.
There will also be space for delivery trucks to park and unload.
Local ward and borough councillor Clive Elliott has welcomed the plans.
He said: "The Queen's Arms has been empty for some time and, in principle, I feel this application is to be supported.
"With the new Phoenix School bringing new life to the centre of Dawley, I am pleased that the development, which caters for local residents, is being considered but I will, of course, be keeping a close eye on the issue to ensure any development complements rather than detracts from the local area."
