Gym plan for Newport swimming pool

This is how Newport Swimming Pool could look if plans for a major revamp get the go-ahead.

Telford & Wrekin Council has applied for planning permission to add an extension onto the current building at Victoria Park.

That would create space for a health and fitness suite, similar to that at the council's leisure centres in Wellington and Madeley. The gym would be large enough for more than 50 pieces of equipment.

A spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council said: "Currently, the health and fitness offer within Newport is limited, so this is exciting news for residents in the area.

"This investment by Telford & Wrekin Council will offer affordable and easy access to local high quality gym facilities and will support the council's health and well-being priorities."

As part of the works, a unisex changing area will be created.

The council spokesman said a unisex area at Wellington Leisure Centre had proved popular with families, school groups and bathers who rely on the support of carers.

Facilities for disabled users will also be improved and eight additional car parking spaces will be added.

In its recently submitted planning application, the council said the extension had been designed to be discrete, sympathetic and functional.

Subject to planning approval and contract award, work will start on the new gym in July with completion in January 2014.

Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member for leisure and well-being, said: "The council is committed to extending and improving its leisure provision with access for the whole community."

Details of the proposals are on display in the pool foyer and at Newport Library.
