Shropshire was covered with a fresh blanket of snow today, as parts of the region remained on snow alert.

Heavy snow fell in some parts, with the south of the county getting the worst.

But forecasters said the misery would soon come to an end, with warmer and sunnier weather just around the corner.

Shropshire was on yellow alert for snow but escaped the worst of the conditions, with the Met Office issuing severe weather warnings for much of Scotland and northern England.

Sally Webb, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said the snow would begin to clear later today, increasingly turning to rain and drizzle as milder air begins to move in. Temperatures in Shropshire tomorrow are expected to reach as high as 10C (50F).

She said: "We will see up to 2cm (1in) across the South East throughout the day, 2cm to 5cm (1in to 2in) quite widely, and over higher ground and in the North up to 8cm (3in), or 10cm (4in) across higher ground.

"It will be milder for the rest of the week, mainly dry with sunny spells and cloud."

Flood alerts remain on the River Worfe, Wesley Brook and Albrighton Brook and tributaries; the Rivers Tern, Perry, Roden, Strine and Meese and their tributaries.
