Wheelie bin warning to speeding Shropshire drivers

A crackdown on speeding motorists has been launched in response to growing concerns over drivers 'trying to break the sound barrier'.

The drive is being organised by Shropshire Council and the police to target drivers in Gobowen and St Martins, near Oswestry.

Part of the campaign has seen 30mph wheelie bin stickers handed out to residents in St Martins Road in Gobowen.

More than 750 residents have signed a petition calling for a pedestrian crossing to be brought in on the road.

Councillor David Lloyd told a meeting of the area's local joint committee on Tuesday that speed checks would be carried out in Gobowen after the talks heard worries about the speed of traffic, particularly on roads near the village's primary school.

Councillor Lloyd said he had handed in the petition to Shirehall highways bosses calling for a pedestrian crossing on St Martins Road.

He said: "We have already brought this up at the parish council and we all see the number of people still trying to break the sound barrier on that road."

Councillor Lloyd said highways bosses would be doing initial checks on speeding troublespots, including on Whittington Road and streets around the primary school, to collate evidence of the problem.

He said: "If we can get hard evidence of that speeding it would be very helpful."

The meeting also heard that a similar crackdown was taking place in St Martins.

A report said: "The issue of speeding in St Martins was raised in the last meeting.

"Since then, Constable Neil Williams has spent time in St Martins carrying out speed enforcement.

"Those who exceeded the speed limit have been stopped and been reported.

"Speed enforcement will be carried out at different days, times and locations."

The petition in Gobowen has been spearheaded by villager Dot Basham, who, with her team, collected 762 signatures.

About 1,300 motorists a day are breaking the 30mph speed limit despite a high profile safety campaign.

Bosses at the Safer Roads Partnership, vowed to carry on catching the speeders until they finally obey the warnings.
