Landfill depot bid for Telford may create 38 jobs
About 40 jobs could be created in Telford if plans to extend works at a landfill site are approved.
Sita UK, which owns the Granville Landfill site in Redhill, hopes to develop a waste transfer station and refuse collection vehicle depot, as well as new office buildings and ancillary works.
The project would create 38 jobs at the site.
In the application submitted to Telford & Wrekin Council for approval, Sita UK said the proposed waste transfer station would primarily accept municipal waste from the Telford & Wrekin area, as well as commercial and industrial waste from Granville, Halesfield and Ketley community recycling centres.
The proposals also include a replacement vehicle workshop to the rear of the proposed waste transfer station, and a revised access to the Granville community recycling centre.
Once the new facilities are up and running, the site will be able to collect and transfer about 20,000 tonnes of recyclable waste a year and about 40,000 tonnes of residual, non-recyclable waste.
A spokesman for Sita UK said: "The proposals relate to a municipal waste contract with Telford & Wrekin Council that Sita UK is tendering for.
"The available waste contract identifies the need to treat and dispose of 40,000 tonnes of residual waste and 20,000 tonnes of recyclable waste from Telford & Wrekin Borough.
"Currently, residual waste from the borough goes directly to Granville landfill. There is also limited capacity within Telford & Wrekin to deal with these waste streams.
"The proposed development will have a capacity to receive, bulk and transfer up to 60,000 tonnes of municipal waste from the borough of Telford & Wrekin.
"Waste will be collected and bulked at the waste transfer station for transfer for use as a resource, for recycling, treatment and disposal.
"The main advantage of the proposed location is the obvious benefit of making use of a previously developed waste management site, set within the context of existing waste management facilities and infrastructure and the wider landfill.
The application is linked to Sita UK's success in tendering for the council's waste contract."
Sita UK is expected to hear within two months if its application for planning permission has been approved.
