High Street giant Next is looking to move into a former Comet store in Shropshire left empty after the electrical chain collapsed, it has been revealed.

The firm, which already has a presence on the Meole Brace Retail Park, in Shrewsbury, intends to move into the larger vacant premises on the same site and double it in size.

A spokesman for Next said today it was too early to say how many jobs the move would create if it goes ahead.

The expanded premises would be a Next Home shop, selling the company's fashion and homeware products.

It would sell a wider product range than the current Next shop on the Meole Brace Retail Park, which is mainly focused on clothing and footwear.

A spokesman for LaSalle Asset Management, which has put in the application, said that while the store would attract customers who would otherwise shop in the heart of Shrewsbury, the expanded store should not have a major impact on traders in the town centre
