Thomas Cook to close Oswestry shop

A Shropshire branch of travel giant Thomas Cook is set to close it was revealed today.

The company, which also owns Co-operative Travel, revealed on Wednesday that it could close 195 of its high street travel agencies, with the Oswestry branch among those earmarked.

There are three members of staff at the Cross Street branch.

Joanna Wild, managing director of the Thomas Cook Co-operative retail network, said: "Following careful consideration, we have announced that Thomas Cook Oswestry store is proposed to close and we are working with those colleagues who are affected."

Councillor Martin Bennett, Oswestry mayor, said; "I am disappointed as this adds pressure on Cross Street."

Martin Anderson, chairman of Oswestry Chamber of Commerce, added: "It is sad news for the town and for the employees and those using the service."
