Stonehouse Brewery, based in Weston near Oswestry, has seen its popular Station Bitter beer given top marks at the Society of Independent Brewers national awards.

The beer was named best in category in the standard beer class at the event in Sheffield and Shane Parr, co-owner of Stonehouse Brewery, received the award from actor Neil Morrissey.

Shane Parr of Stonehouse Brewery said: "We are still in a state of shock over this but everyone I've spoken to since says they aren't surprised because Station Bitter is a great beer.

"This award is something we would never have dreamed of getting when we started up six years ago. It is really a credit to everyone working at the brewery.

"We have been making Station Bitter since the start and it is the best selling bitter by far."

He was handed an engraved crystal award for the achievement.

Mr Parr said Salopian Brewery won silver for its Golden Thread in the Champion Strong Bitters and gold for Oracle in the Champion Bottled Gold Beers.

He said: "The fact that Shropshire has numerous award winning breweries, that push each other on quality and standards, can only be good for customers around the county."
