Millicent 'Millie' Adams, who now lives in Coton Hill House care home, on Berwick Road, in Shrewsbury, was born on March 18, 1913 and reached her century on Monday.

Most of her family live in the Coventry area and 16 of them joined her for a special celebration on Sunday.

Her son Brian said: "She was originally from Shrewsbury, but moved to Coventry before the Second World War and lived in Coventry until about 10 years ago and then moved back to Shrewsbury."

After being brought up in Hope, she ended up in a different part of the Midlands after marrying quarry manager Reginald Adams in 1937, who served in the Royal Air Force during the war.

Mrs Adams had several jobs during her working life, including serving as a manageress at a bakery in Coventry for about six years.

The pair had three children and Mrs Adams, whose husband died at the age of 89, now has six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Her son Brian said: "She is a wonderful woman and has still got all her faculties. She didn't want a fuss, but I feel something like this is a milestone that should be marked."

The family made a cake and a big card for her on Sunday, while on Monday staff took Millie out for a special celebration lunch.
