Abraham Darby Academy design on list for award

A new Telford school is in the running for a top architecture award.

The Abraham Darby Learning Community building has been shortlisted by RIBA, the Royal Institute of British Architects.

It is on a shortlist of 12 for the Midlands award, the winner of which will be announced on June 12.

If Abraham Darby wins, it will be put forward for both the national and the RIBA Stirling award, which is due to be held in London on September 26.

It hit the headlines during construction in 2011 when part of the roof canopy collapsed.

Workers were dragged from the rubble and the opening was delayed by six months.

Steve Hawke, principal of Abraham Darby Academy said: "The building has a traditional external look to it. The bricks were chosen based on what best reflects traditional Ironbridge architecture.

"The internal design was specifically used to try and enhance the pupils' ability to learn."

The building was designed by Building Design Partnership, which has offices throughout the UK.

Gavin Elliot, manager of the firm , said: and the project director, said: "It is always flattering to be nominated for design awards, but in the end the main satisfaction is derived from seeing a project successfully completed."
