Welshpool Town Council wants to make five playgrounds and the town playing fields at Maesydre dog-free zones due to owners failing to clean up after their pets.

The meeting will be held at the town hall on Wednesday at 7pm and dozens of members of the public are expected to attend to voice their opinions on the plans.

Robert Robinson, town clerk, said the recommendation being put forward to the town council for the meeting would see a ban on dogs in all children's playgrounds, skateboard parks and the memorial gardens.

He added: "The recommendation allows dogs on the Brookfield Road open space, dogs on leads allowed in the country park, but no dogs allowed on Brookfield Road football pitch, Dola y Felin football pitch and Maesydre sports pitches.

"It is also recommended that a small group is set up involving dog owners, vets et cetera to put together a programme of education and perhaps a dog owners charter.

"The public are welcome to the meeting , but there will be limited time for public participation."

Previously, the council said dog fouling had persisted despite a number of warnings and campaigns, and even CCTV had been used to target the culprits.
