Welshpool taken off Britain Tour map
The Tour of Britain cycle race will not visit Welshpool this year, officials have confirmed.
The race, which brought a huge boost to the town for the past two years, will instead have a stage from Machynlleth, through Llanidloes and down to Rhayader and Builth Wells.
Organisers said the tour regularly changes its route and it was not a question of the town being snubbed.
Robert Robinson, Welshpool Town clerk, said the town had been lucky to have the tour twice, with thousands of people visiting to see riders including Mark Cavendish in action.
"We have had it two years," he said. "We are happy that it has gone to Machynlleth. We would like to have it here but good luck to them."
Powys County Council said it was delighted that the tour will still be coming through the county.
Councillor Graham Brown, cabinet member for regeneration at Powys County Council, said: "We are delighted that the country's best known and most viewed cycling event is returning to Powys for a fourth time. It is a massive event, hugely popular and attracts thousands of visitors to the county, providing a welcome boost to the economy."
The tour will start in Peebles in the Scottish Borders on September 15 and finish in central London on September 22.
