Overnight work on a £1 million project to revamp a railway station has caused months of misery for residents living nearby, it has been claimed.

One resident living near Albrighton Railway station even claimed she had to resort to sleeping pills to drown out the noise, a public meeting heard.

Bosses behind the scheme to improve the station came under fire from people living in Station Road last night. They have pledged to look into the complaints.

More than 100 people attended the meeting at the Red House, in High Street, which was organised by the Albrighton Civic Society.

The £1 million project, due to be completed this summer, will see the Grade II listed station's platforms and footbridge refurbished, as well as improvements made to its existing buildings.

But last night bosses from Network Rail and its contractors May Gurney were given a tongue-lashing by sleep-deprived residents on Station Road.

Pediatric nurse Sian Roberts said she had resorted to taking sleeping pills following weeks of late-night noise from contractors.

She criticised the lack of prior warning from Network Rail before the work began in January.

She said: "I am fed up of being woken up by your employees."

Dave Rodgers, Network Rail project manager for the Albrighton Railway Station project, apologised for the delay in notifying nearby residents about the late night work, but added it was necessary to complete the improvements.

He said: "I do appreciate it can be a nuisance and if we have caused excessive noise then I can discuss that with my operator."
