This tipper truck got stuck at the Shell station in Tern Hill, near Market Drayton

Fellow customers at the Shell station in Tern Hill, near Market Drayton, were left terrified when parts of the canopy came crashing down and the lights went out.

And bosses said they do not know how much the damage will cost to repair.

But the petrol station is open as usual and the repair work, which is expected to take several days to complete, is under way.

Station manager Mohammed Ahmed said: "People were a bit scared when it happened, there was a lady near the pump that was scared and the person on the till, too. But everything is fine and no-one was injured."

The 18-ton lorry was owned by Ringway, the company in charge of looking after Shropshire's roads.

Steven Day, who works at Acorn Construction Plastering Ltd in Telford, was in the filling station at the time and said it was an unexpected sight.

He said: "A worker driving a lorry turned up next to me to put fuel in his truck when apparently the lift started to go through the roof as we all ducked for cover. The lights flickered and panels began falling down, people thought it was an explosion at first."

Kevan Rudd, divisional manager for Ringway, said: "The vehicle was immediately taken out of service and an investigation is being carried out into what caused the apparent mechanical fault."
