Steven shell-shocked by 10 double yolked eggs

The chances of cracking open a double yolked egg are pretty slim. One tenth of one per cent, in fact.

Ten eggs all had double yolks

So imagine the odds of going through a box of a dozen eggs and finding that 10 of them had two yolks.

Shell-shocked Steven Evans, from Whitchurch, has done exactly that.

The father of one was preparing dinner for his family on Saturday night when he started cracking the eggs.

And as one after another turned out to be double-yolked, he went from being pleasantly surprised to shocked.

Finding six in one box has odds of one in a quintillion – that's 1/1000000000000000000000000000000 – or the same odds as winning the National Lottery three times.

Mr Evans said: "I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was Saturday night so I thought I would cook egg and chips .

"I cracked three and each one had a double yolk. I thought it was a bit of a fluke but I was then intrigued to crack the others.

"I asked my wife, Charlotte, if it was all right and then we just watched in amazement as one after another had a double yolk.

Only two in the entire box had single yolks.

"It was as bit of a shock. I've done a bit of research and apparently it's the same odds as winning the lottery three times.

"It was a bit of fun cracking one egg after another to find out if it had a double yolk but I'd definitely rather win the lottery."

Mr Evans bought the box from Tesco store in Whitchurch.

A spokesman for the British Egg Information Service said: "The chances of an egg coming out with a double yolk are 0.1 per cent. It's extremely unusual to find 10 such eggs together in the one box.

"The double yolks tend to come from younger chickens whose hormone systems are not fully developed yet."
