Fire crews were called to Shepherds Whym Farm, Bishop's Castle, yesterday and 12 firefighters spent three hours at the scene trying to rescue the newborn.

It was eventually returned safely to its mum, who during the drama kept a close eye on the well and rescue attempt.

The rescue at Banks Head ended just after 3pm as the newborn was winched out of the well with the help of specialist rescue equipment brought to the scene from Wellington. A crane was used to lower a ladder into the well so a fire officer could climb down and bring the lamb to the surface.

Local people came to the scene to watch the drama unfold.

Watch Manager Magill from Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service said they received a call at 12.04pm yesterday.

He said the lamb was remarkably calm after its ordeal and seemed content as it was returned to its mother.

"The lamb had fallen approximately 10 metres.

"It is not known how the lamb got down there but seemed to be fine and ran off when placed back on firm ground," he added.
