Ironbridge Post Office is moving to the pharmacy in The Square on June 7. Post Office bosses say it will enable the branch to open for a further eight hours a week.

It will be open from 9am to 6pm weekdays and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. It follows a six-week consultation period, during which customers were asked to give their opinions on how services could be improved.

Tony Jones, Post Office regional network manager for Wales and West of England, said: "We understand how important having a post office is to residents in Ironbridge and we are confident that this new modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

"The move is part of major modernisation programme across the Post Office network designed to make it easier for customers to do business, through longer opening hours and modern open plan environments. The changes to the branch are part of a three-year investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office, that will see around 6,000 branches - about half the Post Office network- converting to new-style branches. The investment marks a commitment to no more branch closures."

The move comes as part of a revival in post office services in the county. In Muxton, residents could soon be benefiting from a post office open seven days a week. A six-week consultation ended last week on plans to move Muxton Post Office into the Premier store in Humbers Lane, The Humbers.

And in Hadnall, the post office was reopened at Hadnall Village Stores at the start of May three years after it was shut down as part of nationwide cuts.

Last month, workers in Telford town centre joined a national strike over plans to franchise or close Crown offices.
