Digging works outside Shrewsbury's old Music Hall close roads to traffic
Work has begun to widen one of the main footpaths in Shrewsbury town centre.
Workers started digging up the path outside the former Music Hall, on Market Street, yesterday as part of plans to replace the stonework.
The path will be widened and a line of bollards put in place to stop motorists parking on the footpath close to the Loch Fyne seafood restaurant.
The Square, Market Street and Swan Hill will be closed to traffic for up to four weeks, with drivers facing disruption as the one way system is suspended.
Diversions via The Square and Princess Street will be in place but pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will still be able to use the roads.
Dave Mansfield, senior coordination technician at Shropshire Council, said: "Work is being carried out on Market Street from the front of the old Music Hall to the junction with Swan Hill.
The existing stone will be relayed and replaced – and the footway will be widened to improve access for pedestrians.
"New bollards will also be installed to prevent drivers parking on the footpath."
Mr Mansfield added that work is expected to take up to four weeks to complete but access will be maintained throughout.
