Drivers face more fuel price changes

The cost of filling up at the pumps has fallen, but fuel prices still remain fragile, motoring chiefs warned today.

The price of petrol on UK forecourts has dipped on average from 136.89p a litre in mid April to 133.35p in mid May, according to the AA.

The average cost of diesel is 138.17p, down from 141.76p a month ago.

Prices varied yesterday at forecourts in Shropshire and Mid Wales but the majority were below the national average.

The cheapest deal in Oswestry was offered at Morrisons in Beatrice Street, where petrol cost 130.9p per litre and diesel cost 134.9p.

The Shell garage in Salop Road, Oswestry, was charging 131.9p for petrol and 134.9p for diesel. Identical prices were charged at the Esso garage at Mile End service station on the edge of Oswestry.

Petrol at Stans Superstore in St Martins cost 131.9p and diesel was 136.9p.

Store partner Andrew Faulks added: "We also have an offer of 7p a litre off for people spending £50 in store."

In Ludlow, Harry Tuffins garage in Foldgate Lane was offering unleaded at 134.9 per litre, while diesel was 138.9 per litre.

In Mid Wales, Morrisons in Pool Road, Newtown was leading the way with a litre of unleaded costing 130.9p and diesel at 133.9p per litre.

A store spokesman said: "The forecourt price across the country seems to have fallen quite a bit in recent weeks and that has been reflected at Morrisons in Newtown."

Among the cheapest in Telford was the Asda filling station at Donnington Wood, where petrol was on sale for 129.7p and diesel was being offered at 134.7p. At Morrisons in Market Drayton unleaded was priced at 132.9p and City Diesel was 137.9p.

In Shrewsbury, Asda in Old Potts Way was the cheapest by 0.2p per litre, with unleaded at 129.7p per litre and diesel at 134.7p per litre. Both Sainsbury's at the Meole Brace retail park and Morrison's in Whitchurch Road came close, were selling unleaded at 129.9p per litre and diesel at 134.9p per litre.

But today the AA said this week's International Energy Agency warning that traders and speculators were taking control of the European fuel market meant that more and ups and downs could be expected.
