Councillor Leon Murray said the two sectors, along with education and training and public service, were the 'backbone and life-blood of our community'.

Councillor Murray was voted in as the borough's new mayor at a ceremony at Oakengates Theatre last night and said he was looking forward to getting started in his new role.

He has appointed Councillor Malcolm Smith as his deputy and has chosen his charity to support for the next year as Severn Hospice, where he holds a pastoral role.

Councillor Murray said: "It is a great privilege and honour to be mayor of Telford & Wrekin.

"There are four things I want affirm during my time as mayor; business, education and training, volunteering and public service.

"I think that these four things are the backbone and lifeblood of our community, and we would be much worse off without them.

"It is very difficult to say what my plans will be for the next year as I know we will get lots of invitations to go out and meet people."

Councillor Murray, who received an MBE in 2007 in recognition of his efforts promoting community relations is vice president of British Methodism and a deputy lieutenant of Shropshire.
