One of Shropshire's top footballers made the biggest signing of his life at the weekend. Elliott Bennett, from Telford, who now plays for Premier League outfit Norwich City, tied the knot with his sweetheart.

Elliott, 24, and Kelly Eveson, from Little Dawley, met on a night out in Shropshire seven years ago and now live in Norwich where the right winger helped his team to 11th place in the top flight last season.

The couple were married at Peckford Castle in Cheshire.

After the wedding Elliot said: "I am the happiest man in the world.

"I married my best friend, my gorgeous new wife, Kelly, in front of my closest family and friends at the most spectacular venue."

His new wife said: "We have been so lucky. We had a wonderful day with about 100 guests in the daytime and more in the evening.

"The weather couldn't have been better. It was perfect."

On the eve of their wedding, the footballer, who spent his schoolboy days playing for Wolverhampton Wanderers, was not out on a stag night or making last minute preparations.

Instead he called in at the Telford Food Bank.

"I had heard a lot about the food bank from my mum, and knew they were having an open evening so as I was in Telford and I dropped in.

"I went to the supermarket first and picked up a basket of non-perishable foodstuffs to donate.

"I was amazed at the work of the food bank.

"It's not just for the people you would think need food hand-outs, but for ordinary families and people who fall on hard times.

"Kelly and I are so lucky to be in the position we are in and be able to afford such a wonderful wedding.

"Going to visit the food bank was a real eye opener.

"If people can afford, not a basket of food, but just one or two items to donate to a food bank now and again I would urge them to do so.

My basket – which only cost £16 in total – included a couple of packs of pasta, less than 50p each.

"That's not much to donate."

He said he was now hoping to support a food bank back in Norwich.
