The thousands of people who did make it through the gates at Cosford Air Show were given an unexpected thrill when it was announced that Prince Harry was flying in the skies above them.

Harry, known as Captain Wales in the Army, was part of the Apache Attack Helicopter Display Team which performed at the show in the afternoon.

The crowd was only informed of his presence seconds before the display.

Former Countdown star Carol Vorderman, who was also at the show, took to Twitter to tell followers: "Prince Harry (Captain Wales) displaying in Apache at @cosfordairshow x he's good"

Alex Jones, 18, from Wolverhampton said: "I can't believe Prince Harry was piloting that Apache."

Harry, 28, a co-pilot gunner, serves with the RAF's 662 Squadron of the Army Air Corps (AAC) from which the display crew-members have been selected this year.

Lieutenant Colonel Tim de la Rue, commanding officer of 3 Regiment AAC with responsibility for the team, said Harry had been "delighted" to have been selected as part of the team for the summer.

The Apache team performs manoeuvres in the helicopter, rather than aerobatics like the Red Arrows.

Many of the aircraft at Cosford also took part in the Bob Jones Memorial Air Show in Welshpool, yesterday. The show was renamed last year in memory of the owner of Welshpool Airport, who died in a plane crash last January.

Montgomeryshire MP Glyn Davies said the crowds at the show were "massive". He said: "Bob would have been proud."
