Residents in Shropshire are less likely to die early than people living in Telford & Wrekin, according to a national league table of premature death rates published today.

In the list of 150 local authorities, Shropshire came 36th with 240 deaths per 100,000 people, while Telford & Wrekin, with 300 premature deaths per 100,000 people, came 96th.

The table also shows people living in the north of England have a greater risk of dying early than those in the south.

The league table uses a colour system to rate areas tackling premature deaths from red for the worst to green for the best, comparing the number of people under the age of 75 who died over a two-year period.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt described the results as "shocking" and called for major changes to improve health.
