Tributes to popular Telford scout leader after tragic death in fall at docks
Tributes were today paid to a popular scout leader from Telford who died after falling from machinery.
Stephen Greenaway, from Coalport, died following the accident while working in Wales last week.
His wife, Belinda, and his son, Zach, said he was an inspiration and lived his life to the full.
Mrs Greenaway said: "Steve was an inspirational man, scout leader, father and husband and we are so proud of him. He lived live to the fullest. He loved scouting with a passion and gained so much from it.
"Our hearts are breaking at his loss. We thank everyone for their wonderful words and support."
Mr Greenaway joined the Coalbrookdale scout group in 2007 as an assistant cub scout leader and became a scout leader in October 2009. His wife was chairman and his son a young leader with the group.
He recently sold his engineering company to spend more time with his family.
The 50-year-old fell from machinery at Pembroke Dock port, where he had been working. He suffered multiple injuries and was flown to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff where he died.
Keith Wale, the district commissioner for Shropshire Severn and Teme Scout District, said: "Steve was an active volunteer scout leader for six years and gave his time, energy, inspiration and enthusiasm to so many. His smiling face and willing nature will be greatly missed."
Marilyn Hughes, of Ironbridge and Coalbrookdale Community Association, said: "We express our sadness at such a terrible event and the untimely loss of a fine man. Our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and all of his scouts."
Jake Bennett, group scout leader, said: "Steve was a great leader and worked hard to ensure that those attending found it enjoyable and fulfilling.
"Many, children in Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge will have had a lot of fun gaining experience in the skills of scouting and pioneering that, as an engineer, he was so good at. We will forever remember his spirit ."
Andy Bennett, the assistant scout leader, said: "He was a proud family man and cherished the time he spent with Belinda and Zach. He was a true friend and colleague.
"If you ever asked Steve what the time he would say 'time of your life' and with him you did."There was also a note posted on the noticeboard at Coalbrookdale and Ironbridge School, which read: "We wish to pass on our condolences to the family of Steve Greenaway who sadly passed away this week.
"Steve was a lovely man who gave many hours of his time to the Scouts and Cubs over the years as Scout Leader. He also supported the Friends of Coalbrookdale School while his son attended the school. He was a wonderful, kind hearted, practical man who made Scouts fun."
The funeral will be held at Coalbrookdale Church next Friday, June 21 at noon.
