A Shropshire town council could finally get a new clerk after private talks, it has been revealed.

Members of Whitchurch Town Council's personnel committee met in secret on Wednesday to discuss the appointment of a new clerk following the shock suspension of Peter Martin in November 2011.

He resigned from the position while still under suspension in July last year.

However, the council has refused to state why he left.

Peter Cooper, who is currently acting as the council's locum town clerk on a six-month contract, said: "We held a non-public meeting on Wednesday where we put together a new job description and person specification for the role. I hope an advert for the role will go live next week.

"This is a new council that really wants to work for the benefit of Whitchurch."
