The 73-year-old Severn Hospice fundraiser is on the final leg of his circumnavigation of the country by water and is expected to cross the finishing line this weekend.

His success depended on whether he could battle through the narrow River Morda, which connects the Montgomery canal to the River Vrnwy, and on to the River Severn.

Yesterday volunteers were on hand near Maesbury to help haul his small, rigid inflatable boat over a fence from the canal to the river, which is little more than a brook.

It was the only moment the inflatable has left the water for 21 days. Mr Grayston, of Pant near Oswestry, is raising funds for the Severn Hospice, where his wife, Karen, was cared for before she died.

If all goes well he should end his challenge, which began on May 24, on Sunday in Shrewsbury.

People can donate to the fund for the Severn Hospice by texting ABWA97 £(amount) to 70070 or go to www.justgiving.com/allbywater
