Bare – all the planters had today been removed from the railings on the bridge across the Severn at Bridgnorth

Engineers from Shropshire Council ordered the troughs that sit on railings on the crossing at Bridge Street be removed becuase they could cause a danger.

But it has infuriated members Bridgnorth Town Council who have demanded they be reinstalled.

A compromise has been agreed to allow the flowers to be returned and remain until September, but their long term future is uncertain.

Town Council clerk Anne Wilson: "Shropshire Council has decided they might not be safe.

"The baskets have been there for two years and I'm confident they will be up again soon. I was in Shrewsbury the other day and noticed their bridges had flowers ."

Mrs Wilson said Shropshire Council had ordered the flowers be removed for the summer, but had now allowed them to be replaced and left until the end of September.

Shropshire Council spokesman Maria Jones said a fault in the railing had been reported by a member of the public, which made the flower troughs insecure.

She said: "The rail can be physically shaken so the flowers had to be taken off as a precautionary measure.

"Shropshire Council now plans to work with the town council on the issue."
