Historic aqueduct to be lit up as part of anniversary celebrations
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct near Oswestry will be lit up as part of an evening of music and entertainment to celebrate the fourth anniversary of it gaining Unesco World Heritage Site status.
On July 13 there will be a celebratory event on Acrefair Football Club pitch underneath the aqueduct featuring bands, a fairground and fireworks.
The aqueduct, which carries the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee, was designated as a World Heritage Site in 2009 because of the role it played in the Industrial Revolution as part of the country's canal transport links.
Joe Bickerton, from the Wrexham Destination Management Partnership, said: "We are so fortunate to have a World Heritage Site on our doorsteps and what better way to celebrate this than use the magnificent pillars for an event which will not only attract new visitors, but also help benefit local businesses and raise awareness of what we have to offer in the area?
"When we first illuminated the aqueduct in 2012, it was a real spectacle and we quickly decided that we should try and make this celebration event an annual occurrence.
"I'm sure this will be a brilliant night and something that we can continue to develop over future years."
The aqueduct attracts thousands of boaters, cyclists and walkers each year and has been praised by Unesco for having inspired canal preservation policy and making a "strong contribution to raising awareness of the heritage left behind by the industrial period".
The event will start at 7pm and end at 11pm. Visitors are encouraged to bring a deckchair and a picnic.
Access may be difficult for some types of wheelchair. Limited disabled parking will be available next to the event field.
Free parking will be available at the Trevor Basin and a shuttle bus will operate. Tickets are available at £4 adults, £2 concessions and £10 for a family ticket in advance from the Tourist Information Centre and Mile End, Oswestry.
Entry payment can also be made at the gate.
