People flocked to Bowring Park Re-creation Ground for the event, which included a parade of floats plus activities in two arenas and a music tent.

Despite unpredictable weather, the crowds on Saturday were bigger than in previous years according to organisers.

Denis Allen, co-organiser of the carnival, said: "The event went fantastically well, despite the rain at lunchtime. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and Wellington is very lucky to have such talented groups and individuals, who were all part of the entertainment."

Carnival queen Zara Bannu, 16, a pupil at Ercall Wood Technology College, was joined by carnival princess Jaymee Burston-Jones, a pupil at Blessed Robert Johnson School.

The parade began at the top of New Street and made its way along Market Street before arriving at 1pm at Bowring Park where a full afternoon of free games and entertainment were provided for all the family.

The park hosted two two arenas and a music tent as well as more than 30 charity and business stalls where visitors could buy homemade jewellery, crafts and bric a brac.

Kuldip Sahota, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, was part of the parade and opened the carnival.

Mr Sahota said: "We had a lovely day. We walked down from Glebe Street down to the park through the town centre to see what was going on.

"There was a wonderful lively buzz and the streets were filled with children and horses. It was a great atmosphere and everybody had a smile on their face."

"There was a fancy dress theme and the winner was a 10-year-old girl who dressed as a mermaid. She did really well.

"The rain did hold off until about 2.30pm, which made the day more enjoyable. I spoke to stallholders attending and they seemed very pleased with the turnout."

Wellington Mayor Graham Riley said: "It was absolutely fantastic; a fantastic turnout and it was certainly one of the best. We did have a bit of rain, but not until later on.

"The procession was brilliant. One of my absolute favourite parts of the day was the Welsh Horse Yeomanry. They were on beautiful shire horses, giving wonderful demonstrations. They were absolutely superb. The pipe band and hovercraft exhibitions were first class. A wonderful day that was enjoyed by all."

Other entertainment was provided by local choirs, musicians and bands. There was displays by marching bands and a military vehicle display. Visitors also enjoyed displays from the Exotic Zoo, Hoo Farm and donkey rides.

Mr Allen said: "Because of the unpredictable British weather we organised a number of marquees where visitors could enjoy a beer and watch the entertainment."

Wrekin College Combined Cadet Forces took provided part of the entertainment. Sergeant Major W02 Eddie Fanneran said: "I think they did incredibly well. They were very excited to take part and to represent the school. They were proud to be taking part and I was proud to be looking over them. They represented the Cadet Force in the best way possible and an enjoyable day was had by all."

Wellington residents also took to Twitter to sing their praises of the event. Deborah Reck said: "I had a great time at the Wellington Unity Parade & Carnival. Huge well done to @WellingtonTCl and all the organisers."
