The mischievous dog had got its head stuck in the wrought-iron gate at the home of Julie and Mark Sumner in Whitchurch.

The couple spent 15 minutes trying to free the six-month-old pet belonging to their daughter before calling the fire service to help.

Firefighters prised the railings apart with specialist equipment at the home in Meadow View Road, to allow Edie to free herself.

Mrs Sumner said: "We didn't want to call the fire service out but we didn't know what else to do. It was very embarrassing.

"They were absolutely wonderful. They were here in five minutes and they were excellent the way they dealt with her.

"She just popped her head back out and carried on as if nothing had happened."

Mrs Sumner looks after her daughter's dog about once week.

The couple, who also have a Labrador Dougle, are watching the dogs more closely now and have put chicken wire on the gate to prevent a repeat of the incident.
