Shropshire Star design for stage costume
Children at a school on the Shropshire border have found a novel use for the Shropshire Star – by turning copies into new clothes.
Pupils at St Mary's Primary School in Mucklestone, near Market Drayton, have recycled editions of the paper to create skirts and T-shirts which they will be wearing when they perform at Hanley's Regent Theatre on Friday as part a dance project called Creative Minds.
The school is among several in the area taking part in the project and if they are judged to have one of the best dance routines they will be invited to return to the theatre to perform during the theatre's Creative Minds Festival which runs from Tuesday until the following Friday.
Recycling work carried out by pupils will also be the subject of an ITV show presented by Sir Trevor McDonald, and cameras will be filming the youngsters tomorrow.
Headteacher Jane Hughes said: "The children have been working very hard on the dance project.
"The performance is along the lines of Emile Sande's song Read All About It and has a newspaper theme so we thought we would use newspapers for the costumes.
"The children brought in black T-shirts and leggings and we have stuck newspaper on them.
"I think it is a fabulous project and we have been lucky in that we have managed to have a dance teacher come into the school on a regular basis to help the children.
She added: "We do a lot of recycling and ITV cameras will be with us tomorrow to film what we do.
"The show is looking at recycling in the country and will be shown on August 1."
