Camera calls for Whitchurch blackspot junction

Calls have been made for cameras to be put up at a busy junction in Whitchurch after it was claimed motorists are jumping red traffic lights as children walk by.

Peggy Mullock, Shropshire councillor for Whitchurch North, wants cameras put up by the traffic lights at the junction of Brownlow Street, Green End, Station Road, Talbot Street and Bridge- water Street in the town.

She said it has been an ongoing problem and something needed to be done.

She said: "It is getting ridiculous. Children cross there twice a day, it is so dangerous, people just go straight through the red lights."

She said if a camera was put up then it would help combat the problem.

"If you think something is there watching you, you won't go through the red light," she added.

"There are two lots of schools that are accessed by that crossing, the infant school and the junior school are both nearby. It is something that worries me.

"We are going to work in partnership with the police to get it sorted."

Karina Evans, local policing officer for Whitchurch, said that it is something that needs to be discussed by the highways department. She said: "The traffic lights are quite old, they haven't been looked at for years.

"It is our only set of traffic lights keeping our learners going. They have been altered as much as they can."

Councillor Mullock will now follow up the issue with Shropshire Council's highways department.
