Call for action on one-way system

Pressure is being put on council bosses to sort out a controversial one way system which has been described as a danger to motorists and pedestrians.

The Welshpool one-way system has been responsible for a number of bumps and incidents of people driving the wrong way since its launch in February 2011.

Now Powys County Councillor Ann Holloway said she is putting pressure on the county council to get them to implement changes to ensure people's safety.

The authority carried out a review into the system last year, publishing a report in December saying many problems had been ironed out, but improvements could be made to safety.

Now Councillor Holloway said she is chasing up the council after hearing nothing for six months.

She said: "I have spoken to Councillor Viola Evans who is on the committee which looked into the one way system and she has promised me that she will get the wheels in motion and find out what is happening as it has been six months since the review and there has been no update since.

"It is vital that something is done to make this road system safer because the way it is at the moment it is only a matter of time until someone is hurt or there is an accident.

"There are pinch points and areas where I don't think it is safe to cross such as outside the Spar in Church Street and something needs to be done sooner rather than later, I don't want this forgotten about.

"I was very satisfied with my conversation with Councillor Evans and I want to thank her for ensuring this matter will be looked at as soon as possible."

Councillor Evans said today that she had already raised the issue this week and would be pursuing action "as soon as possible".
