Lloyds Bank said branches in both Welshpool and Newtown will be unaffected by changes in the company which is re-branding dozens of banks as TSB.

There had been fears and speculation that the Welshpool and Newtown branches would either be changed to TSB or closed altogether.

Millions of customers are being forced to change from Lloyds to a new bank, TSB, which is being set up as part of an EU ruling after the Co-operative Bank pulled out of taking on more than 600 Lloyds branches.

TSB, which was acquired by Lloyds in 1995, was merged into Lloyds (Lloyds TSB) and is now being re-established as a bank in its own name to ensure Lloyds does not infringe EU rules on the number of branches it owns.

Glyn Davies, Montgomeryshrie MP, said it was good news for constituents. "If they had closed it would have caused great problems for people."
