The 25-year-old, from Telford, won gold in the women's individual compound archery competition last year as she retained the archery title she won in Beijing four years previously.

She joined Olympic hero Mo Farah and Hollywood star Ewan McGregor as they collected New Year Honours at the investiture ceremony yesterday.

Farah received his CBE for services while McGregor was appointed an OBE for services to drama and charity.

Danielle's victory followed success in Beijing and in Delhi two years before, where she made history as the first disabled athlete to represent – and win a medal for – England in an able-bodied event at the Commonwealth Games.

Originally from Steeton, West Yorkshire, Danielle moved to Telford to be nearer Lilleshall where she trains.

She is coached by her sister Georgina, an able-bodied archer, and took up the sport aged 15, four years after she was diagnosed with reflex sympathetic dystrophy, a neurological condition that causes her severe burning pains in her feet. Despite the chronic pain she refuses to use a wheelchair.
