The 100-year-old regatta took place on the Severn near Dale End Park and was an official qualifier for Henley Regatta.

Organisers had promised an event just like the ones seen at the London Olympics which has obviously had an impact as scores of youngsters signed up to take part at Ironbridge.

The regatta races featured clubs from all over the country, including the Cardiff-based Llandaff Rowing Club and the Peterborough University rowing team, as well as more local teams, such as from Shrewsbury School and Bridgnorth Rowing Club.

A beer tent was offering refreshments for spectators and a disco was held on the banks of the river on Saturday evening. The event ran from 8am on Saturday until 5pm yesterday.

Clive Jones, vice president of Ironbridge Rowing Club, said the two-day regatta had been a huge success and attracted crews from across the Midlands and beyond.

He said: "It was the best regatta in years with the weather playing the biggest part.

"Clubs from all over country attended including Hereford, Pengwern in Shrewsbury, Lincoln, Abingdon, Bewdley, Birmingham, Bridgnorth, Bristol, Oxford, Derwent, Devil's Elbow, Evesham, Grosvenor, Huntingdon, Stourport, St Ives and Loughborough.

"Lots of local business sponsors the event and we would like to thank them and everyone who attended – making it a great two days."
