Councillors in Shropshire have welcomed plans for a link between the M54 and M6 Toll road.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander announced the route last week when he set out the Government's public spending plans.

The Treasury document, Investing In Britain's Future, commits to building the road – which is seen as key for the county's future prosperity.

However, it is still very early days and definitive plans setting out costings and the route have yet to be announced.

Telford & Wrekin Councillor Bill McClements welcomed the commitment.

He added: "This is a key issue for Telford & Wrekin Council. We have made a commitment in the past month to pro-actively attract inward investment into the borough with our Invest In Telford programme and improving the transport links to the rest of the country is an important part of that."

The support for the proposed link was echoed at Shropshire Council.

Councillor Claire Wild said: "Good road and transport links between Shropshire and the rest of the country are vital for the county and our economy, and we support any infrastructure improvements that would have economic benefits for Shropshire.

"A link road between the M54 and the M6 toll road would be a great help for Shropshire businesses who need good links to the West Midlands and beyond, and will provide a boost for tourism by making it quicker and easier for people to get to the county."
