Petition triggers a debate on Ludlow tip future

Campaigners fighting to save a tip in Shropshire from closure have triggered a full council debate on the proposals.

They have collected 1,300 signatures in two weeks from people opposed to the facility in Ludlow closing. Former town councillor Amanda Pope said it showed the strength of feeling on the issue.

Shropshire Council says any petition carrying more than 1,000 names will be debated at full council with campaigners being given the opportunity to speak.

Officials have yet to reveal their plans for the tip but it is understood one option is to close it, leaving residents with a nine-mile trip the nearest site at Craven Arms.

The findings of a review into the viability of the Coder Road site had been due to be presented to the council's cabinet later this month before the petition was handed in at Shirehall yesterday.
