It's a girl! Shropshire doughnut test predicts sex of royal baby

It's hardly scientific, but if the Shropshire doughnut test is anything to go by, Kate is having a girl.

As speculation about the due date intensifies, one shop in the county is asking its customers to take part in a sweet way to predict the sex of the Duchess of Camrbridge's new arrival.

The doughnuts look identical on the outside, but one of two fillings ooze out when you bite into them – one girly-pink and one boy-blue.

The novel survey is the brainchild of staff at the Krispy Kreme shop in Telford Shopping Centre.

As customers take a bite, the result is recorded on a chart. The idea has also taken off with other expectant mothers, who have been buying trays of the doughnuts for their baby showers.

So far, more pink doughnuts have been sold than blue ones, but the survey will continue until the big day comes.

Jenna Minehan, from Krispy Creme, keeping the in-store tally up to date

Shop assistant Jenna Minehan said: "The first day the doughnuts came out, there was a lot of interest. We started seeing the same people coming back to see if they got a girl or a boy each time. People are also coming in and ordering boxes of 12 for their baby showers.

"We've seen people sit down and take bets on what it's going to be. They take pictures of each other with their doughnuts and post them on Twitter and Facebook.

"We have a sticker board to show off the results and people love coming to see the results. At the moment we have sold a few more doughnuts with the pink filling, so it looks like it is going to be a girl."

Natalia Thomas, eight, from Lightmoor, Telford, was among customers trying the doughnuts. She said: "They taste really good. Mine had a pink filling, so I definitely think it's going to be a girl."

Parents-to-be Hayleigh Brownhill, 20 of St Georges and Alex Jones, 21, of Wooside gave the royal doughnuts their seal of approval.

"I am really looking forward to finding out what Kate's having as I am pregnant too," said Hayleigh. "I hope the royal baby is a girl as there are enough boys in the royal family," said Alex.

Sophie-Leigh Hill, three, of Randlay tucked into a doughy delight with mum Sarah and dad Chris at the Krispy Kreme store.

"It's a really nice idea," said Sarah Hill, 30. "I think everyone is getting ready for it now and just want to find out what she's going to have. I hope it's a girl." Jeff Walker popped into the shop for a sugar rush during a trip from Australia and said down under people also waiting in eager anticipation of the royal arrival.
